2021年10月、Geolonia は自社のオープンソースソフトウェア Charites (カリテス)を、国連ベクトルタイルツールキット（UNVT）プロジェクトに寄贈しました。Geolonia は今後、UNVT の GitHub Organization で Charites などのソフトウェアの改善、メンテナンスを行います。
国連ベクトルタイルツールキットとは
国際連合では、地図が整備されていない地域で活動する際などに、デジタル地図を自前で用意できる体制を整えています。国連の活動で、地理的な状況把握と分析、インフラの整備や管理、シミュレーションのための地図が必要とされているからです。また、プラットフォームの地図に依存したり、データを渡せないという地図のオーナーシップによる事情もあると思われます。
ところが地図エンジニアがいなくても、インターネット環境もよくない場所でも、自前でGoogle Mapsのようなシステムを構築するのは難しいことです。
そこで、世界各地で活動する職員が、どこでもデジタル地図を活用できるように一連のツールを取り揃えようというのが「国連ベクトルタイルツールキット」、UNVTプロジェクトです。
UNVT Dashboard には、
The United Nations Vector Tile Toolkit (UNVT) is a collection of Open Source Software (OSS) to produce, host, style and optimize vector tiles for web mapping.
とあります。地図データを作り、ホストし、可視化表現するまでの全工程を、オープンソースのソフトウェアで完成させようとしています。また、現在利用可能な最高の技術、簡単さへのこだわり、地図データのホスティングにはラズベリーパイ（超小型で安価で標準的なコンピュータ）を使うなどもおもしろいですし、UNVTが採用している技術、取り組んでいる課題は、Geolonia社内の開発でも常に参考にしています。
プロジェクトの名前に「ベクトルタイル」と入っていることも特徴的です。ベクトルタイルは画像で地図を作る「ラスタータイル」との対比で名前がついている新しい地図の方式ですが、さまざまな特性や価値があり、今も技術発展が継続中です。
国連はベクトルタイル技術の有用性への投資として、UNVTプロジェクトを運用していますが、その種は日本の国土地理院にありました。2010年代に実用化されたベクトルタイル技術を、国土地理院は早い段階(2014年)に採用、「地理院ベクトル」として試験運用をしています。その有用性を活かすため、日本政府は国連事務局と覚書を交わし、専門人材を派遣し、その人材がベクトルタイル技術を国連に持ち込み、UNVTという現在のオープンソースプロジェクトの発足・運営に大きく関わっています。
Charites, デジタル地図デザインの多様性をあげる
Charites は、地図初心者や専門家が、デジタル地図のデザインするための道具です。
ベクトルタイル地図のスタイリングは難しいのです。数千行のJSONフォーマットで書かれたCSSのようなコンセプトのファイルが、地図のデザインを決めています。この style.json の弱点は、可読性や構造がなく、効率的、継続的に設計や創造性の発揮をするには複雑すぎることです。
これを簡単にできちゃうようにする Charites のメインの機能は、次のとおりです。
- 要素ごとにファイル分割し、変数を利用できるYAMLフォーマットの地図スタイルのメタ言語
- スタイル編集がリアルタイムに確認できるプレビュー
ウェブサイトやウェブアプリケーションの開発・デザインでは当たり前に使われているCSSメタ言語のSassやLessと同じです。高い可読性、ファイル分割による構造化、変数や関数、ブラウザでのプレビューというウェブ開発のスタンダードを、ウェブ地図のデザインの世界に持ち込んだということです。
SassやLessを利用できる開発者、デザイナーであれば、誰でも地図のデザインができます。

「寄贈」の狙い
今回の寄贈には、Geoloniaとして次のように取り組みました。
- Charites のユースケースが増えてツールが使われることを最優先する
- オーナーシップを渡すことで活用を促進する
- そのようなベストな環境で、Geolonia も OSS のプロジェクト運用に関わり Charites を改善する
「デザインが難しい」という課題を共有できる方々であって、開発も利用も活発になる場所で、自社の課題解決も進めたいという方針です。
以下は、10月19日に行われた国連オープン GIS イニシアティブの月例会議で、Geoloniaが行ったプレゼンテーションの原稿と資料のまとめです。
Hi, I’m Shinichi Nishikawafrom Geolonia. Thank you Taro san for introducing us. Let me introduce the company and a new vector-map design tool, Charites. We’ll have a short demo, and I’m hoping to have some Q&A time in the end.
Geolonia
We are Geolonia, a Japanese startup who solve geospatial problems. Our mission is to API-fy everything to empower both machines and human creativity, and our products are digital map, Japanese address solutions, space IDs, and location data handling.
I’m the COO, and today we have the CEO Takayuki Miyauchi and our developer Ryo Kamata.
UNVT and Geolonia
We joined the UNVT team in 2020. Mr. Fujimura introduced us to the project right after Miyauchi started the company. We have been interested in the UNVT project, because we believe vector map has the huge potential of solving a lot of modern problems, and we think the key to expanding this technology is to make it simple and accessible for broader people. And that’s what we see UNVT is doing.
Charites
Charites is a tool that allows developers and designers to design vector maps.
Before, developers needed to write styles in JSON format. JSON is a format that all programming languages understand. The problem is that it’s not so easy for human, especially when you are working on a visual component. To solve this problem, Charites introduces a meta language of json style, which is easy to read, write, and re-use.
Also, Charites provides a map style live-preview that shows all design changes in real time.
Styling a map is more important than it sounds. It’s to determine what to visualize, how to draw, in what order. So, styling a map is to design how we understand and think about the world data.
By the way, in Greek mythology, Charites are the goddesses of charm, beauty, and human creativity. They were worshipped by artists and those who aspired to technology.
We expect that Charites will bring all the designers in different areas to join the digital map design, while also enabling existing professionals to boost their design workflow. The goal of the tool is to produce much more maps with diverse designs.
To make for the goal, expansion of diverse maps, we donated Charites to the UNVT project and we want to keep contributing through enhancements and maintenance. For this purpose, we ask you to promote this new open source project.
